Behind the Book: The House of Unburied Men

None of us arrives in this world with a completely blank page.

By the time we are born, part of our story has already been written. We inherit names, faces, traditions, beliefs, and family stories. We also inherit the consequences of decisions made long before we were here to witness them.

Some of those decisions become blessings. Someone worked hard, stayed faithful, survived the impossible, or loved the next generation well. Their courage becomes a foundation beneath our feet, even if we never knew their name.

Other inheritances are more complicated.

Families pass down silence as easily as they pass down silver. Grief can travel through generations when no one is permitted to speak of it. Old fears become rules. Secrets become shadows. Sometimes we find ourselves carrying guilt, anger, or shame that began before we were born.

We may not have created those burdens, but eventually we must decide what to do with them.

That idea stayed with me while I was writing The House of Unburied Men, the second book in the Black Magnolia Society series. These characters live beneath the weight of choices made by their ancestors. The past is not merely remembered in their world. It remains present, powerful, and determined to collect what it believes it is owed.

But inheritance is not destiny.

We can honor what was good without preserving what caused harm. We can be grateful for the people who came before us while admitting that some of their choices were wrong. We can keep the love, the wisdom, and the resilience—and refuse the fear, secrecy, and destruction.

That refusal can be an act of love too.

Perhaps every generation receives both a gift and a reckoning. We inherit a story already in progress, but we are not required to repeat its ending. We are allowed to choose what continues through us and what finally ends with us.

That is the question at the heart of The House of Unburied Men: When the past reaches for you, what will you accept—and what will you refuse?
